Effect of time and rate of sowing cereals on the response to nitrogen fertilizers and the influence of time of nitrogen application
Highest yields were obtained with earliest sowings, with yield reductions due to delayed sowing ranging from 3 to 13 per cent per week delay. Yields increased with rates of seed above 22 kg/ha in seven trials and in most cases were increased with rates above the normal 50 to 60 kg/ha. Nitrogen fertilisers increased yields in 18 of the 23 trials. Increased nitrogen rates and increased seeding rates partly counteracted yield reductions caused by delayed sowing.
