Abstract

This management plan sets out a number of options for the control of commercial gillnet fishing for barramundi in the Kimberley. the plan focuses on existing commercial fishery, and on the fishermen consulted during the process of developing these management arrangements. However, the barramundi stocks of the region are increasingly exploited by large numbers of both local and tourist recreational fishermen whose needs must also be catered for. Because recreational fishermen are not easily identified or contacted as a group, I have endeavoured in this foreword, to set out the management options which best take into account the future needs of both the recreational and commercial fishing groups.
