Abstract

Historical article, not intended as a practical guide but instead to illustrate historical practices. Advice in article may not hold true with modern cattle farming.

The spaying of cows in this State is usually restricted to the beef herds in which females are spayed at all ages from five months onward. A spayed animal grows more quickly, fattens more readily and yields better quality beef than one not so treated. As a treatment for unprofitable cows in the dairy herds, spaying is worthy of consideration by dairyfarmers.
