Large fruit, drought conditions, "off" crops and immaturity are among factors known to be associated with the appearance of bitter pit in early harvested Granny Smiths for export.
It is also known that fruit developing pit has a much lower calcium level than fruit remaining sound.
Recent work has also demonstrated that the presence or absence cf vigorous vegetative growth adjacent to fruit has an important effect on pit development.
