Cultivation and traffic hardpans in Swan Valley vineyards

Abstract

Hardpan in Swan Valley vineyards occurred at a depth of 5 to 9 in. below the soil surface with its greatest density under the wheel track position. Results for bulk density were negatively correlated with hydraulic conductivity. Three treaments for old vine areas being prepared for replanting were compared but only a lupin treatment had any effect on the bulk density of the hardpan. Core samples indicated that compaction was greatly reduced at lower moisture contents.
